EL: Ms. Anna

Teacher Bio

My name is Anna Bjork and this is my third year as an EL Teacher at MIMS.

I was raised in Brookfield, Wisconsin and moved to Minneapolis to attend college.  Even though I've lived in Minneapolis for seven years now, I will always be a Green Bay Packers fan : )

I received my Bachelors Degree in Spanish and Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota. I also have my Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota in Second Languages and Cultures with a license in ESL (English as a Second Language).

In my free time I love cooking, being outside, going to concerts and watching movies.

We have varied levels of English proficiency at MIMS so there is not a set curriculum that we use in each grade. Instruction is tailored to meet the students at their level. We also make sure to provide a variety of hands-on activities to help the students engage in their learning.

Here is a graphic for where students are placed depending on their WIDA proficiency level.

For our newcomers (WIDA levels 1.0-2.9) we use the ACCESS Newcomers Curriculum, Saddleback Welcome Newcomers Curriculum and Saddleback ELL Teen Literacy Library. The EL teachers also use a plethora of additional resources to supplement the curriculum and make it more hands-on and activity-based.

For students that are WIDA levels 3.0-4.5 we also use the ELL Teen Literacy Library. We focus heavily on the following skills to ensure students are equipped to succeed in their content classes:

  • Main Idea

  • Summarizing

  • Sequencing

  • Theme

  • Text Features

  • Context Clues

  • Compare and Contrast

  • Cause and Effect

  • Writing

  • Grammar

  • Reading Comprehension
